General Itinerary

Daily Itineraries can vary due to high-tide times and days when the Injalak Arts Centre is closed.

Pick-ups from Jabiru Accommodation facilities begin at 7.45am, then departing Jabiru by 8.05am for a scenic drive through Kakadu National Park to a morning stop at the Border Store. At Cahill’s Crossing we cross the East Alligator River into Arnhem Land. Our first stop at Red Lily Billabong allows us to explore Bininj (local Aboriginal) culture with our experienced guide as we learn about the food resources and hunting and fishing associated with the wetlands.

We move on to other exclusive aboriginal art and cultural sites including the ‘Coming of Manhood’ Spear site and excellent art in a nearby cave. The other sites that are visited depend on seasonal road access conditions. We then explore the Injalak Art Centre in Arnhem Land town of Gunbalanya (Oenpelli), where you are able to watch artists engage in their painting and weaving techniques whilst producing works for sale. Amazing and affordable local art can be purchased direct from the artists at Injalak.

Lunch is enjoyed below a rock shelter site when road conditions are wetter. When roads are dryer the Inkuyu Billabong in the Mikkinj Valley is a spectacular setting for lunch under shady trees.

Returning to Cahill’s Crossing keep your eye out again for crocs as we cross back into Kakadu from Arnhem Land to make an afternoon stop at the Border Store. From there we return you to your Jabiru Accommodation at around 3.30 to 3.45pm. An easy paced day with lots of sightseeing and a real Arnhem Land adventure.

Note: Itinerary is modified where necessary due to accessibility issues of seasonal site access and Injalak Art Centre openings. Your Driver/Guide will ensure the best touring experience available to you on the day of travel.

Alcohol: No alcohol can be carried to Arnhem Land as it is a Federal Prohibited area.

Insects: At certain times of the year flies and mosquitoes may be an inconvenience. It may be prudent to bring your own personal repellent.

Climate: While the local Bininj people of Kakadu recognise 6 distinct seasons, the main seasons you will experience are the dry season (May to mid-September) and early build-up (mid-September to October) The days are usually fine and warm with temperatures in the low to mid thirties from June until September. In May and from October, the days are warm to hot with temperatures in the mid to high thirties and increased humidity. Thunderstorms may occur early and late in the year.
