Pick-ups from Jabiru Accommodation facilities begin at 7.45am, then departing Jabiru by 8.05am for a scenic drive through Kakadu National Park to a morning stop at the Border Store. At Cahill’s Crossing we cross the East Alligator River into Arnhem Land. Our first stop at Red Lily Billabong allows us to explore Bininj (local Aboriginal) culture with our experienced guide as we learn about the food resources and hunting and fishing associated with the wetlands.
We move on to other exclusive aboriginal art and cultural sites including the ‘Coming of Manhood’ Spear site and excellent art in a nearby cave. The other sites that are visited depend on seasonal road access conditions. We then explore the Injalak Art Centre in Arnhem Land town of Gunbalanya (Oenpelli), where you are able to watch artists engage in their painting and weaving techniques whilst producing works for sale. Amazing and affordable local art can be purchased direct from the artists at Injalak.
Lunch is enjoyed below a rock shelter site when road conditions are wetter. When roads are dryer the Inkuyu Billabong in the Mikkinj Valley is a spectacular setting for lunch under shady trees.
Returning to Cahill’s Crossing keep your eye out again for crocs as we cross back into Kakadu from Arnhem Land to make an afternoon stop at the Border Store.
